Echoes of the Tide House

When her nineteen-year-old daughter is injured in a suspicious beam collapse at an island tide house, restoration archivist Naomi Reed follows a hidden notebook and film canister into a financial scheme run by her own relatives.

Fictional story. Contains themes of family betrayal, corruption, and hospital trauma.

Chapter 1: The Salt and the Fog

The intensive care unit of Blackwood Coastal Hospital smelled of antiseptic and damp rain. The steady monitor beat matched the distant hum of foghorns drifting across Blackwood Bay. Beside the bed sat Naomi Reed, her knuckles resting against the cold guardrail where her nineteen-year-old daughter, Maya, lay sedated. A heavy timber had collapsed at the historic tide house on Heron Island during an evening survey, fracturing two ribs and puncturing one lung.

The trauma team had inserted a chest tube, controlled the bleeding, and kept Maya lightly sedated while a ventilator supported her breathing. The critical-care physician spoke with measured caution. "Her oxygen level is stable, but the next twelve hours will tell us whether the lung and chest injuries remain controlled," he had said at midnight. Naomi watched the measured rise and fall of Maya's chest, unable to accept that her vibrant, inquisitive child—an apprentice restoration draftsperson—had simply walked beneath a rotten joist.
