Chapter 1: The Echo in the Timber

The tide gauge at Blackwood Cove clicked steadily against the weathered cedar pier, its brass gears tracing the midnight pull of the Pacific Ocean. Inside her drafty coastal survey shed, Clara Vance leaned over a drafted topographic map, her hands stained with blue drafting ink and salt spray. The air smelled of damp pine, diesel fuel, and old marine records. Outside, the fog rolled off the headland in thick gray curtains, muffling the distant chime of the harbor bell. Clara was calibrating a set of ground-penetrating radar transceivers when the radio receiver on her workbench hissed to life.

Her nineteen-year-old niece, Hannah, rarely called her at half-past ten at night. Hannah was an architectural apprentice working her first paid seasonal assignment, cataloging historic drainage foundations at the century-old Sterling Manor estate up on the timber ridge. Usually, Hannah sent neat evening text messages listing soil slope percentages or asking about historical concrete compositions. She did not call over the emergency marine radio frequency unless the ridge towers had lost cellular signal.
