Chapter 1: The Sawdust and the Ledger

The autumn wind coming off Penobscot Bay carried the sharp tang of salt, wet cedar, and old pine tar. Inside the main shed of Vance Maritime Restorations, the cold reached through the soles of my work boots long before noon. I wiped fine amber sawdust from my safety goggles and adjusted the clamp holding a fresh deck plank against the timber hull of a nineteen-twelve sailing cutter. My forearms ached from four hours of hand-planing, but the rhythmic curls of shaved wood gave me the only quiet moment I had known all week.

On the sawhorse beside me lay a clipped stack of overdue invoices for brass fastenings, marine varnish, and dockside electricity. At the bottom of the pile sat a final notice from our lumber supplier, threatening to pause deliveries if the outstanding three-thousand-dollar balance was not cleared by Friday. I pushed the papers underneath a box of rusted copper rivets so my apprentice, Hannah, wouldn't see them when she came back from her lunch break. Every time I looked at those numbers, my chest tightened until it felt hard to draw a full breath.
