Fictional story. Contains depictions of interpersonal psychological manipulation, financial coercion, and property disputes.Chapter 1: The Rain at Saltwater Press
Clara Vance stood beneath the dripping eaves of the Alder Bay Maritime Archive as night settled over the Maine harbor. Rain rattled against the lantern glass, casting uneven amber light across the damp granite steps and the weathered cedar sign hanging above the entryway. The air smelled of wet oak, salt spray, and the bitter tang of solvent from the printing room. Beside her ankles, Barnaby—the stray ginger cat who had claimed the archivist bench three winters ago—shivered against Clara’s boots, his ears pinned back against the gale.
Marcus Sterling stepped onto the porch before Clara could bolt the iron lock. His dark wool coat was dry around the shoulders, his leather shoes silent against the granite. He reached past her without asking, his fingers curling around the brass key ring resting in her palm.
