Chapter 1: The Shattered Silver Illusion

The ballroom of the Hawthorne-Sterling estate stood above the Atlantic cliffs of Newport, Rhode Island, glowing beneath three crystal chandeliers. Judges, financiers, and old New England families had gathered for the society presentation of Leo Hawthorne, the two-month-old heir to a shipping and real-estate fortune.

Near the center of the room, Leo slept in an antique bassinet draped in white silk. His mother, Sarah, remained close. A former pediatric nurse from a working-class family, she had endured years of contempt from her mother-in-law, Eleanor Hawthorne, but that evening her concern went beyond insults.

For nearly an hour, Sarah had watched Eleanor dismiss guards from the bassinet, check her watch, and repeatedly touch the sleeve of her plum jacket. When the quartet began and every face turned toward the stage, Eleanor stepped beside the child and slipped one hand toward the blankets.

Sarah crossed the marble floor before she had time to consider appearances. She shouted for Eleanor to move away and struck her shoulder just as the older woman's hand reached the bassinet. Both women fell into a display of sterling-silver christening gifts. Trays, cups, and engraved rattles scattered across the floor.

Eleanor immediately accused Sarah of suffering a breakdown. Several guests believed her. Sarah stood over the bassinet, shaking but alert, while the family's security director, Marcus Vance, approached the fallen gifts and asked everyone to remain where they were.

A small object blinked beneath a crushed gift box. Marcus picked it up with a handkerchief and recognized a long-range tracking beacon. It had fallen from Eleanor's sleeve during the collision. The room's sympathy shifted in an instant, but Marcus warned the guests not to decide guilt for themselves. He photographed the device in place, called law enforcement, and ordered the security recordings preserved.
